Vincent D’Onofrio Weighs in on That Kingpin Cliffhanger in the ‘Hawkeye’ Finale

**Warning: This article contains spoilers for the finale of Hawkeye**

Hawkeye came to a thrilling conclusion on Wednesday, December 22 and it saw the story take an unexpected turn.

The penultimate episode of the Disney+ show ended with the reveal that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, was back, following the cancellation of Daredevil in 2018.

And the finale saw the character prove he was very much still in his prime, back in control of the criminal underworld after the events of Daredevil Season 3.

But it ended on a shocking cliffhanger that left the character’s fate in the balance, which actor D’Onofrio has now spoken about following the episode’s release.

Is Kingpin dead after the Hawkeye finale?

The Hawkeye finale saw Fisk and the Tracksuit Mafia wreak havoc on New York City, with Kingpin fighting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) after targeting her mother Eleanor (Vera Farmiga).

While he managed to get away after Kate knocked him out with a trick arrow, the character didn’t get very far as he was confronted by Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), his adoptive niece.

Kingpin reflected on how he and Maya were family, telling her that he « loved her » even as she pointed a gun to his head.

In typical Marvel fashion, the camera panned up and away from the pair before a gunshot could be heard ringing out, leaving Kingpin’s fate up in the air.

Speaking to TVLine after the fact, D’Onofrio reflected on if he thought the character had survived the confrontation and he claimed he had « hopes » that he would return, but nothing was certain.

He explained: « There are many facets to the character that could be explored, so I only can hope that we continue. It’s not the first time I’ve had to walk away from this character, but we’ll see. »

D’Onofrio was also asked what he’d like to see happen to Fisk if he does return, and the actor remarked on who he’d want Kingpin to face: « In the comic runs, it was Punisher, Spider-Man and Daredevil. That would be cool.

« [Exploring] the relationship with Maya would be cool. It was actually one of the things when I researched Daredevil that I remembered as one of my favorite runs, when he took her under his wing. »

Maya is set to have her own spin-off show titled Echo, named after her superhero alter-ego, which Fisk could well appear in.

In the Marvel comics, Echo confronted Kingpin much like she does in the Disney+ show and she shoots him in the face, an act that blinds but doesn’t kill him, and the villain is later able to regain some of his sights through reconstructive eye surgery.

It is currently unclear if this is the storyline that will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it would be a shame if D’Onofrio had been brought back into the franchise only for him to be killed off shortly after.

Hawkeye is available to stream in full on Disney+, and Daredevil Seasons 1 to 3 is on Netflix now.
